Ba Vang Pagoda is a place dedicated to the study and practice of Buddhism. Our mission is to create the best possible conditions in which to explore and practice the Buddhist path. We study and practice meditation and Buddha Dharma in a spiritual community based on the ideals of compassion, generosity, and awareness.

Ba Vang Pagoda, also known as Bao Quang Pagoda, is situated in Thanh Dang Mountain, at the height of 340 m above sea level in Quang Trung ward, Uong Bi city, Quang Ninh province, Vietnam.

13th Century

In the Tran dynasty (13th century), King Tran Nhan Tong left his royal palace to go to Yen Tu Mountain where he founded Truc Lam Yen Tu Zen sect which is a Vietnamese Zen sect. Ba Vang Pagoda follows Truc Lam Yen Tu Zen sect. From the 13th century to the 21st century, over the period of 800 years, Ba Vang pagoda has undergone the first construction and 4 later times of renovation. Based on the vestiges excavated by archaeologists, the pagoda may have been built firstly in the Tran dynasty in the 13th century, but it is still unclear about the specific history of the founding monk and the pagoda's architecture.

Master Mahasamon Tue Bich Pho Giac

According to the inscription on the stone incense holder in front of the pagoda, the first restoration was conducted in 1706 by Zen Master Mahasamon Tue Bich Pho Giac, which continued the Truc Lam Yen Tu Zen sect after 300 years of hiatus. However, the temple fell almost completely into ruin. In order to promote the cultural and historical value of the pagoda, Ba Vang Pagoda was continuously invested and renovated. In 1998, the pagoda was refurbished with wood and then in 1993, the pagoda was upgraded with cement for the third time with a total area of 94.97m2

2017

In 2007, local authorities and people insistently and respectfully invited Venerable Thich Truc Thai Minh to take up the position of the abbot of Ba Vang pagoda. At that time, Ba Vang pagoda was primal and derelict: the road to the temple was narrow and bumpy; there was no electricity and water, the buildings were dilapidated and damaged. Accordingly, the Great Thich Truc Thai Minh came here with two empty hands and had to deal with considerable difficulties. However, owing to his enthusiasm, talent, great virtue and the enthusiastic support of pilgrims, Buddhists and local authorities, in 2011, Venerable Thai Minh started to carry out extensive renovations for the 4th time, which transformed a desolate ancient pagoda into a magnificent, glorious and solemn spiritual and cultural center.

After 3 Years of Construction,

After 3 years of construction, a number of structures of the pagoda was completed such as: Dai Dai Hung Bao Dien (4500m2), Lau Chuong (112 m2), Drum (112 m2), Monk's House (1600 m2), Thien Duong (960 m2), Stone Gate, Tam Quan Trung Gate, Tam Quan Noi Gate, and some additional works.
Until now, Ba Vang Pagoda is one of the very few spiritual tourism sites as well as a Buddhism practice center without any service charge in Vietnam.

Ba Vang Pagoda Today

In view of Ba Vang pagoda's present value and its specific contributions to the social community, Ba Vang Pagoda has been acknowledged and awarded many certificates, namely:
- The pagoda with the largest sanctum in Vietnam
- The temple with the largest red wooden drum in Vietnam
- Vietnam Association for Environmental Economics awarded a Certificate of merit “Green and clean pagoda for environmental sustainability”
- Especially, the Spiritual Book Series including 12 books listing names of famous Vietnamese heroes and martyrs were established 3 records: Vietnam, Asia, and the world - Honoring the value of content, humanity and the meaning of worshiping the books.

At Ba Vang Pagoda we practice Buddha teachings into all our daily activities throughout the day: while eating, walking, working, or learning. Ba Vang is a home away from home, and a beautiful, nourishing, simple environment in which to cultivate the mind of awakening.
