Vulture Peak is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites, where the Buddha taught the Dharma on many occasions to assemblies of Bodhisattvas, devas, dragons, demons, and human beings. Here, the Buddha also delivered some of Buddhism's most important sutras.

Today, Vulture Peak still remains a spiritual destination for countless Buddhist devotees and pilgrims around the world who come to pay homage, cultivate merit, and nurture their faith in the Three Jewels. More details about this sacred place can be found in the article below.

General introduction to Vulture Peak

Vulture Peak (also known as Gṛdhrakūṭa) was once part of the ancient city of Rājagṛha, in the kingdom of Magadha ruled by King Bimbisāra; today, it is located in Rajgir, Bihar, India.

It was called “Vulture Peak” because when viewed from afar, the rock outcrop resembles a vulture's head.

During the Buddha's time, the path up the mountain was only a narrow trail. Each day, the Buddha and the Sangha walked down to Rājagṛha for alms and then returned to the mountain to take their meal. They did not often stay at Vulture Peak, but traveled to many places to spread the Dharma.

However, it remained one of the most significant sacred sites, marking the profound history of the Buddha and his noble disciples' spiritual practice and their mission to liberate all sentient beings.

Particularly, the famous Flower Sermon event also took place in this area.

Moreover, at that time, King Bimbisāra and his people were devout followers of the Buddha. Therefore, the King offered the Buddha Venuvana (Bamboo Grove) near the peak, establishing it as the very first monastery in Buddhist history.

Vulture Peak: Where the Buddha preached major sutras and delivered sermons to devas, dragons, and beings of heavenly realms, etc.

At the summit of Vulture Peak, the Buddha often preached the Dharma to various assemblies such as holy monks, heavenly beings, dragons, demi-gods, and demons, whereas assemblies of kings, officials, and ordinary human followers were less common.

When the Buddha preached the Dharma, beings from various realms would be present, hovering in the air, while humans and ordinary monks (those who have not attained the Fruits of liberation) sat upon the ground. The Buddha was the Fully Enlightened One, speaking with a wondrous Brahma sound that could be understood by all beings depending on their capacities and nature. Because his mind was free of obstruction, his words transcended all boundaries, allowing every listener—human or nonhuman—to comprehend his meaning.

Notably, not only did the Buddha reside on Vulture Peak over 2,500 years ago, but many holy monks also made this mountain their dwelling. They were all unparalleled figures of wisdom in Buddhist history, with no one comparable.

Therefore, being able to visit the Vulture Peak to pay homage is considered a rare and precious blessing. Standing before the very caves and witnessing the practice environment of the noble monks, one can deeply feel their immense grace, diligence, and unwavering commitment to the enlightened Path.

Notable remains at present Vulture Peak, India

1. The Buddha's Fragrant Chamber

This fragrant chamber is the place where the Buddha resided and preached the Dharma. It is called the “Fragrant Chamber” because, during his time, devotees often offered precious woods such as agarwood and sandalwood with their subtle, pure aromas to adorn the chamber.

Surrounding the Buddha's fragrant chamber are the caves where his foremost disciples once resided, such as Venerable Mahākāśyapa, Venerable Śāriputra, and Venerable Ānanda, etc. Today, these caves have been renovated to be smoother and more spacious, but before that, their rocky floors were very uneven and rugged.
