The first lesson from the Earth
On September 1st, 2020, Thay Thich Truc Thai Minh gave a lecture on the first quality from the earth, whose whole lesson belongs to Milindapanha Sutra. According to the Sutra, the earth remains calm no matter what one throws on it, regardless of beautiful or dirty things. Learning from this first quality of the earth, Bhikshus need to tame their minds so as not to develop the mind of discontent, love, hatred or resentment towards support or neglect, fame or dishonour, blame or praise, etc. Patience however only brings forth benefits if righteously applied. Thay taught, “Buddhist practitioners must learn the virtue of patience. But our patience must always go with wisdom and with the purpose of achieving enlightenment. It is worth patience to praise the Buddha Dharma, to benefit people and ourselves. Never should we endure anything in a foolish way, it goes against the spirit of Buddhism. ” The lecture helps us get further knowledge about the quality a Buddhist practitioner should be endowed with, that is, patience and how they should be patient.
